Fight against poverty and social exclusion
The European Union is one of the wealthiest areas in the world, and yet 17% of its population possess such limited resources that they can scarcely afford even the basic necessities of life.
2010 marked the EU's European Year for Combating Poverty and Social Exclusion. Many ambitious projects in different areas were launched under the new EU strategy 'Europe 2020', which had as its overriding goal to significantly reduce poverty.
With the support of Networking Europe's project management, the 'Poverty and Social Exclusion Group' seeks to enhance knowledge exchanges and cooperation among countries, organizations and already existing projects in this area, with particular attention paid to the Baltic Sea region.
At present, special efforts are made to identify and establish cooperation among existing networks, ideally leading to a wealth of contacts in time for the EU's upcoming Structural Funds period 2014-2020, and for its EU 2020 project. Should areas be found where networks are missing, the Working Group will try to identify organizations that could fill the void, and to integrate them into the wider network.
The Working Group at present is made up of representatives from the following organizations: the European Anti-Poverty Network, Stockholm City Mission; Basta arbetskooperativ; Stockholm Municipality and the Sensus Study Association.
Mrs. Sonja Wallbom of the European Anti-Poverty Network acts as contact person for the Working Group and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.
